Neem, Oils, Soaps and Botanical Treatments

Neem-based products, insecticidal soaps, garlic extracts, and other botanical treatments occupy an important middle ground in an IPM program — they are generally lower in residue risk than synthetic pesticides and are often compatible with organic growing systems, but they are not without impact on the broader growing environment.

Neem Products

Neem products are derived from the neem tree (Azadirachta indica). Depending on the formulation, they may contain neem oils or purified neem-derived actives such as azadirachtin. Their labelled modes of action and permitted uses vary by product, so follow the current product directions. Green Genius currently stocks:

  • OGS Neem Oil — emulsified for easy mixing; follow the current product directions for permitted foliar or soil use.
  • Mite Rid — cold-pressed neem oil concentrate specifically formulated for spider mite control.
  • AzaMax — APVMA-registered organic insecticide using purified azadirachtin (no neem oil carrier). Certified organic input for ACO growers.

Karanja Products

Karanja oil and meal are derived from Pongamia pinnata and are used in organic growing as a soil amendment and pest deterrent. Unlike neem oil, karanja has a lower odour profile and is well suited to indoor use.

  • HPO Karanja Meal — mix into soil or apply as a top dressing to support fungus gnat suppression and soil biology.

Insecticidal Soaps

Insecticidal soaps work by disrupting the cell membranes of soft-bodied insects and mites on contact. Their activity is primarily by contact, which can reduce persistent exposure compared with some residual products, but they can still affect beneficial organisms if applied directly. Check product-specific compatibility before combining them with live biological controls.

  • NatraSoap — organically registered; effective against aphids, thrips, mealybugs, whiteflies, leafhoppers, and mites. Product information describes relatively low impact on beneficial insects; avoid direct spraying of released beneficials and verify compatibility with your beneficial supplier.

Garlic and Botanical Sprays

  • Bio Green Garlic — high-allicin garlic and ginger extract. Apply as a foliar spray or root drench. No residual smell or taste per product description.
  • OGS IPM Spray — multi-ingredient botanical spray including neem, silica, saponins, fermented turmeric, aloe, and kelp. Made in Australia.
  • Ed Rosenthal Zero Tolerance — essential oil aerosol (cinnamon, rosemary, clove, thyme). Fast-evaporating with no sticky residue.

Important: Natural does not automatically mean harmless or compatible with beneficial insects. Neem oil, essential oils, and insecticidal soaps can all affect predatory mites and other beneficial organisms if applied directly or if residues are present at the time of release. Always check compatibility with your beneficial supplier before combining spray treatments with a biological control program.


Sticky Traps and Monitoring

Sticky traps are one of the most practical and cost-effective monitoring tools available to growers. Used consistently, they provide an ongoing record of pest activity that helps you detect problems early, track population trends, and assess whether treatments are working.

Using Trap Counts Effectively

The value of sticky traps comes from consistent, recorded monitoring rather than occasional inspection. Count and record the number of each pest type captured each time you check your traps, using a consistent inspection schedule. A rising count indicates a growing population; a stable or falling count after treatment suggests the program is working. Replace traps when they are full, dirty, no longer sticky or according to the product instructions.

Sticky traps capture flying adults. They do not capture eggs, larvae, pupae, or non-flying stages. For pests like fungus gnats, thrips, and spider mites, trap counts reflect only part of the population. Use trap data alongside direct plant inspection to build a complete picture.


Cleaning and Sanitation

A clean growing environment is one of the most effective pest prevention tools available. Many pest populations persist between cycles because eggs, larvae, or adults survive in debris, on equipment, or in residual moisture. Thorough cleaning between cycles — and regular maintenance during a cycle — significantly reduces this risk.

Grow Space Cleaning

  • Remove all plant debris, dead leaves, and spent growing media from the grow space promptly — do not allow it to accumulate.
  • Wipe down walls, floors, and surfaces with an appropriate cleaner between cycles. Pay attention to corners, drainage channels, and areas where moisture collects.
  • Clean floors and drains regularly to remove organic matter that supports fungus gnat and shore fly populations.
  • Check and clean air-intake areas — pests and spores can enter through intakes and accumulate on filters.

Trays, Pots and Equipment

  • Wash trays and saucers between cycles to remove algae, salt deposits, and organic residue.
  • Clean reusable pots thoroughly before reuse — root residue and old media can harbour pest eggs and pathogens.
  • Clean and disinfect pruning tools, scissors, and other hand tools between plants and between growing areas.
  • Professor's Nutrients Resin Clean — citrus-based cleaner for tools and equipment. Dissolves resin from trimmers, scissors, and pruners.

Irrigation Equipment

  • Flush and clean irrigation lines, drippers, and reservoirs between cycles to remove biofilm, algae, and salt deposits.
  • H&G Drip Clean — potassium-based drip-line cleaner. Prevents salt crystals and sediment; safe for roots and microbes.
  • GT Oxy Plus — 50% hydrogen peroxide used for nutrient-solution oxygenation, root-zone hygiene and hydroponic system sanitisation at different labelled rates. Handle with appropriate PPE and do not combine with beneficial microbes unless product guidance specifically allows it.
  • Flairform Pythoff — hydroponic water treatment added to nutrient solution as directed to support root-zone hygiene and help control algae/slime and plumbing build-up. Current product information states it can be used from seedling to harvest. Do not combine with hydrogen peroxide or beneficial microbial additives.

Propagation Areas

  • Start every propagation cycle with clean trays, clean propagation media, and clean tools.
  • Inspect all cuttings and seedlings before they enter the main growing space.
  • Keep propagation areas physically separate from areas with known pest pressure where possible.

Note: Follow each sanitising or water-treatment product label carefully. GT Oxy Plus and Flairform Pythoff can both be used in nutrient solution at their specified rates, but they are not general-purpose foliar disinfectants. Do not spray them onto foliage unless the label specifically permits that use.


Root Disease Versus Pest Problems

Above-ground symptoms such as wilting, yellowing, slow growth, and leaf drop can result from a range of causes — not all of them pest-related. Diagnosing from leaf symptoms alone without checking the root zone is one of the most common errors in plant health management.

Similar above-ground symptoms can result from:

  • Root disease — root pathogens can be associated with browning, soft or slimy roots, poor root integrity and odour. Root colour alone is not diagnostic because nutrients, organic inputs and media can stain otherwise healthy roots.
  • Poor oxygen in the root zone — overwatering, compacted media, or blocked drainage reduces oxygen availability and causes root stress that mimics pest damage.
  • Overwatering — persistently wet media stresses roots and creates conditions for both root disease and fungus gnat infestations simultaneously.
  • Nutrient issues — deficiencies and toxicities produce leaf symptoms that can resemble pest damage. Check pH and EC before assuming a pest cause.
  • Root pests — fungus gnat larvae, root aphids, and other soil-dwelling pests cause root damage that manifests as above-ground stress.

Always inspect the root zone directly before concluding that above-ground symptoms are pest-related. Where the growing system allows it, inspect roots without causing unnecessary damage. Healthy hydroponic roots are often white to cream and firm, although nutrient solutions, organic inputs and media can alter root colour. Soft, slimy, deteriorating or foul-smelling roots warrant closer investigation for root-zone stress or disease.

Pesticides and Beneficial Insects

Warning: Pesticides and Beneficial Organisms

This is one of the most important considerations in any IPM program that combines chemical and biological controls. Failing to account for pesticide residues before releasing beneficial organisms is one of the most common — and costly — mistakes in biological pest management.

  • Contact pesticides can kill beneficial organisms directly. Predatory mites, parasitic wasps, and other beneficials are vulnerable to many of the same products used to control pest insects and mites.
  • Residues may remain after spraying. Residual activity varies substantially by active ingredient, formulation and application method. Organic and botanical products can also leave residues that affect biological controls.
  • Oils and soaps may affect beneficial organisms. Neem oil, insecticidal soaps, and essential oil-based sprays can harm or impair predatory mites and insects if residues are present at the time of release, even if the products are considered low-risk.
  • Natural products are not automatically compatible with beneficials. "Organic" or "natural" does not mean safe for beneficial organisms. Always treat natural products with the same caution as synthetic ones when planning a biological control program.
  • Compatibility must be checked before releasing predatory mites or insects. Contact your beneficial supplier and the product manufacturer to confirm the re-introduction interval for any product used before releasing beneficials into the growing space.

Preventative IPM Routine

A consistent, structured routine is the foundation of effective IPM. The goal is to catch problems early, maintain conditions that are unfavourable to pests, and keep the growing environment clean — not to apply pesticides on a schedule.

Routine Inspection (During the Growing Cycle)

Carry out the following at least once or twice per week:

  • Check new growth and growing tips for distortion, discolouration, or pest activity
  • Inspect leaf undersides on a representative sample of plants — this is where many pests feed and lay eggs
  • Look for webbing on leaves, stems, and between growing tips
  • Check growing media surfaces for larvae, unusual activity, or algae growth
  • Watch for flying insects around pots, growing media, and lights
  • Inspect and count sticky traps — record the numbers and pest types captured
  • Inspect any new plants or cuttings that have entered the space since the last inspection

Between Growing Cycles

Use the period between cycles to reset the environment and reduce carry-over pest pressure:

  • Remove all plant debris, spent media, and dead material from the growing space
  • Clean trays, saucers, and pots thoroughly before reuse
  • Clean floors, walls, and drainage areas
  • Inspect and flush irrigation lines and reservoirs
  • Replace all monitoring traps with fresh ones before the next cycle begins
  • Check air-intake filters and clean or replace as needed
  • Review any recurring pest problems from the previous cycle and adjust your prevention strategy accordingly
  • Clean and disinfect all reusable equipment — tools, propagation trays, net pots, and stakes

IPM for Living Soil

Living soil systems support a complex web of organisms — bacteria, fungi, protozoa, nematodes, predatory mites, rove beetles, springtails, and many others. Not every organism you observe in living soil is a pest. Many are beneficial, and some are essential to the function of the system.

Before treating any organism found in living soil, confirm that it is actually causing harm. Predatory mites, rove beetles, and springtails are commonly found in healthy living soil and actively suppress pest populations. Treating them as pests undermines the biological balance that makes living soil effective.

Key Principles for Living Soil IPM

  • Predatory mites and rove beetles are generally beneficial allies. Confirm identification before treating them as pests.
  • Soil biology is disrupted by broad-spectrum treatments. Avoid applying products that kill indiscriminately into living soil systems unless the situation genuinely requires it.
  • Mulch helps maintain moisture, moderate temperature, and support surface-dwelling beneficial organisms. It also reduces algae growth on the media surface.
  • Moisture management remains important even in living soil. Persistently wet conditions favour fungus gnats and can suppress beneficial soil organisms.
  • Neem and Karanja amendments are commonly used in living soil IPM as soil conditioners and pest deterrents. HPO Karanja Meal is well suited to indoor living soil use due to its low odour profile.
  • Avoid unnecessary broad-spectrum treatments. If a specific pest is confirmed, select the most targeted option available rather than a broad-spectrum spray that may disrupt the soil food web.

IPM for Hydroponics

Hydroponic systems present specific IPM challenges. The absence of soil removes some pest habitats but introduces others — particularly those associated with standing water, algae, and reservoir hygiene. Root health is also more directly visible and more immediately critical in hydroponic systems than in soil.

Key Hydroponic IPM Considerations

  • Reservoir hygiene: Keep reservoirs clean and covered. Algae and organic build-up can support pest and pathogen pressure. IPM for Indoor Grow Tents

Indoor grow tents create a contained environment that can be both an advantage and a vulnerability from an IPM perspective. The enclosed space concentrates pest populations and makes spread between plants rapid — but it also makes monitoring, environmental control, and quarantine more manageable.

  • Inspect incoming plants: Never introduce a new plant, cutting, or propagation material into a tent without inspecting it thoroughly first. Quarantine new material in a separate space for an appropriate observation period before introduction.
  • Sticky-trap monitoring: Use yellow or blue sticky traps where they match the pests you are monitoring and inspect them on a consistent schedule. Record counts. A sudden increase in trap captures is an early warning sign.
  • Airflow: Maintain good air circulation through and across the canopy. Stagnant zones inside tents create ideal conditions for spider mites and fungal issues. Ensure your extraction and circulation fans are appropriately sized for the tent volume.
  • Environmental management: Monitor temperature and humidity inside the tent, not just in the room. Conditions inside a tent can differ significantly from the surrounding environment. Use an environmental controller or monitor to maintain appropriate parameters.
  • Remove dead material: Remove dead leaves, spent flowers, and debris from inside the tent promptly. Do not allow organic matter to accumulate on the tent floor or in trays.
  • Maintain access: Keep plants spaced and trained so you can inspect all parts of the canopy. Dense, inaccessible canopies allow pest populations to build undetected.
  • Prevent movement between tents: If you run multiple tents, treat each as a separate zone. Do not move plants, tools, or equipment between tents without cleaning first — particularly if one tent has a known pest problem.
  • Clean between cycles: Empty the tent completely between cycles. Wipe down all interior surfaces, clean the floor, and replace monitoring traps before the next cycle begins.
  • Quarantine affected plants: If a pest is identified in one plant, isolate it from the rest of the tent immediately while you assess the extent of the infestation.

When to Escalate Treatment

Not every pest sighting requires immediate chemical intervention. Matching your response to the level of pest pressure is a core principle of IPM — it reduces unnecessary chemical use, protects beneficial organisms, and avoids creating resistance.

Low Pest Pressure

A small number of pests detected on monitoring traps or during inspection, with no visible plant damage:

  • Continue regular monitoring and increase inspection frequency
  • Correct any environmental conditions that favour the pest (humidity, temperature, moisture, airflow)
  • Remove any affected plant material physically
  • Consider introducing biological controls if the environment is suitable and no incompatible residues are present

Moderate Infestation

Visible pest activity on multiple plants, some plant damage, rising trap counts:

  • Remove and dispose of heavily affected leaves and plant material
  • Increase monitoring frequency based on pest pressure and the treatment or biological-control plan
  • Assess biological control options — if no incompatible pesticide residues are present, this may be an appropriate time to introduce beneficials
  • If biological control is not appropriate or available, select a targeted treatment based on the confirmed pest and apply according to the product label

Heavy Infestation
